Being Happy - Part 1

What is happiness? To different people, happiness means different thing. Some derive happiness from material things - a car, a house, credit cards, a large bank account or going overseas for holidays every year. To others, happiness is a decent meal or just being with family members and friends. Of course there are people who are happy just to be alive. What does happiness mean to you? Do give it a thought for a minute or two and write down what is happiness to you. Keep the piece of paper close to you and take it out every now and then to remind yourself what make you happy.

It would be nice to have happy people around us. The world would be a nicer place to live in. But why are some people happier than others? Happiness, to me, is a state of mind. An unhappy mind makes an unhappy person. Unhappiness comes from being discontented with what you have. Some have a good job, yet they want a higher salary. Some have good look, yet they want a better looking nose. Some have a nice house, yet complain about its size.

Unhappiness also comes when we can't forget and forgive those who have hurt us. Such thoughts not only make us unhappy, but also make us appear unfriendly. On the other hand, when you are happy, you are a more pleasant person. Your relationship with your family and friends is healthier. You can then concentrate better on your work. You can get on with life and live it to its fullest. Look at things positively and you will be a happier person. So how can we be happy most of the time, if not all the time? Well, to stay happy, we must first get to the roots of the unhappiness.
